Digital supply chain maturity is advancing

Digital transformation in supply chains has shifted from chasing the latest technology to solving concrete business problems such as efficiency, cost reduction, quality improvement, and inventory optimization. According to APQC’s analysis, the primary drivers behind digital initiatives are pragmatic rather than experimental, with organizations focusing on measurable returns on investment. Established technologies—such as robotic process automation, cloud computing, automated workflow management, and robotics—form the backbone of most digital supply chain efforts, reflecting a maturation from experimentation to operational deployment.

However, widespread adoption of technology does not automatically translate into digital maturity. APQC’s maturity model reveals that the majority of organizations remain in the early or middle stages, where data and processes are only partially digitized and advanced analytics or AI are used inconsistently. Only a small percentage have progressed to stages where automation acts on insights or where digital transformation extends across ecosystem partners. The research underscores a central theme: sustainable digital supply chain maturity begins with data availability. Organizations that break down data silos and enable real-time information flow across the enterprise—and beyond it—are far better positioned to move from incremental improvement to true transformation.
