Today’s announcement of an NYK Group merger is significant in and of itself, but points to another observation being made by industry analysts worldwide: the resiliency of Japan’s business culture.
It is worth noting that before the creation of Yusen Logistics (Americas) Inc., both NYK Logistics (Americas) Inc. (NLA) and Yusen Air & Sea Service (U.S.A.) Inc. (YAS) were among the first responders to Japan’s tragic natural disaster last month. Indeed, the newly-created company will continue its relief efforts as that country rebuilds its infrastructure and supply chain.
If there was any doubt about the collective purpose and fortitude of Japan’s industry leaders, this move should quickly counter it. The merger not only represents a bold business venture, but exemplifies the courage necessary to make a decision based on confidence and conviction in the wake of a national catastrophe.
Our job here at SCMR is not to pick favorites, but one can’t help but cheer for Yusen to succeed in the Americas and the global marketplace.
