July-August 2023

Most business people have heard the phrase “move fast and break things.” But how do you move fast, break things, and remain profitable? Inside this issue of Supply Chain Management Review are the answers—we hope. We have two articles this month that address decision-making. The articles (“Chain reaction: Isn’t it nice when your supply chain just works?” and “Managing like ‘Maverick’ in today’s turbulent, dynamic environment”) approach the topic of decision-making from decidedly different perspectives, but I believe they are more similar than they appear.

Offered by universities, business schools, trade associations and other organizations, executive education helps professionals develop new skills and knowledge that are vital to long-term career success. Offered online, in the classroom setting, or as a blend of the two, executive education is particularly useful in dynamic industries—supply chain management, for example—where requirements and expectations are constantly changing.

The global pandemic, ongoing labor shortage and technological advancements are a few of the high-level factors that have significantly impacted supply chain operations in recent years. Schools and other educational providers have been honing and tweaking their programs in response, knowing that the executives they serve need new knowledge, skills and expertise in a variety of areas—including business, leadership, and management.

“The academic world has absolutely exploded when it comes to supply chain and executive education, in part because of the pandemic but also because salaries have been historically high for supply chain professionals,” states Abe Eshkenazi, CEO at the Association for Supply Chain Management (ASCM). According to the group’s 2023 Supply Chain Salary and Career Report, individuals who hold supply chain-related associate’s, bachelor’s or master’s degrees earn an average of $30,000 more than the national average salary.

“If you have a baccalaureate degree and you’re working in supply chain, you’re going to out-earn your counterparts in other industries,” Eshkenazi points out. Executives who complete certification programs while employed in supply chain can also bolster their earnings. For example, ASCM says individuals who hold at least one credential reported a median salary that is 16% higher than those who don’t. And people with two or more certifications earn 34% more.

Executive education can help all professionals fill in learning gaps, keep pace with new trends and learn about new tools, applications and technologies. Doing so can help veteran executives who started in entry-level jobs and worked their way up through the ranks enrich themselves professionally and academically. This is a common career track in supply chain, where outstanding warehouse employees may be promoted to warehouse manager and later, VPs of supply chain—all without receiving any formal supply chain education. Others may have majored in finance, business or engineering in college, but never received any formal training in supply chain management.

“When we look at the individuals who come to ASCM for our certifications, the majority of them are either baccalaureate or master’s degree holders,” says Eshkenazi. “They’re already credentialed within operations or supply chain, and they’re looking for that differentiator.” For many, that differentiator comes in the form of technological acumen in a world where automation, robotics and technology are increasingly being used in global supply chain operations.

“What we’re teaching executives has changed since the 1980s and 1990s, namely due to technology and the globalization of supply chains,” says Eshkenazi. “Both individuals who are entering the field and those who are already operating in it are dealing with a [completely different] set of expectations and requirements.”

Narrowing the focus

Jim Rice, deputy director for the MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics, has also been tracking some significant changes in the executive education content and delivery methods. After being offered mostly online for a couple of years during the pandemic, for example, some of the education has moved back into the classroom or is taking place at the company’s site. Still, Rice says most of the course content for MIT’s MicroMasters credential program is delivered online asynchronously: the materials are released and then the executives engage with them on their own schedules.

Rice says MIT also punctuates the courses, which usually run for six weeks to 12 weeks, with “live sessions” that take place via videoconferencing and focus on the subject matter covered in the content. “The pandemic drove a greater consumption of online material, including these mixed or blended sessions,” says Rice, who has had several companies request online, real-time executive education for a small group of students who need training in a certain area (e.g., supply chain innovation). “After the group has completed that, the company will often schedule—say, a month later—for that group to come on campus and spend time with instructors for two-day or three-day sessions.”

On the flip side, Rice says he’s also fielding more requests from companies that have 60-80 or so employees who need training on a very specific topic, such as supply chain planning, demand management or data analyzation fundamentals. The latter focuses on how to think about data; how to analyze that data and draw conclusions from it; and the dos and don’ts of dealing with data in the supply chain management setting. This type of very-focused executive education can help professionals get formal education in specific areas, versus having to learn it on the job.

“I have to credit the companies with wanting to provide that type of data-related education and discipline,” says Rice. “The thought of dealing with all of that data can be [daunting] for someone who is not a data analytics pro.”

Baking it into one holistic course

It’s no secret that supply chains were put to the test during COVID, and that many global networks are still feeling the lasting impacts of the subsequent shortages. That’s because consumer demand increased as the worldwide crisis wound down, exacting even more stress on already-taxed supply chains. “When demand exploded, everything from semiconductors to cars to basic items were hard to get,” says Farrokh Langdana, a professor in the finance and economics department at Rutgers Business School and director of its Executive MBA Program.

The situation has since calmed down, but the lessons learned from the experience has pushed more organizations to rethink their supply chain strategies. To help, Langdana says Rutgers continually updates its Mini-MBA supply chain offering to ensure graduates are well prepared to tackle the “now” and also prepare for what’s ahead. For example, he says both the current inflation rates and the Vietnam offshoring opportunity both drove the need for “major updates” in the school’s executive education curriculum.

As more companies explore manufacturing opportunities in Vietnam as a way to circumvent the current trade wars, Langdana is taking his current executive MBA class to Vietnam to learn more about offshoring to that country. “Vietnam is suddenly a major player,” he explains. “The country is where China was 10 years to 15 years ago, and to the extent that Vietnam is now building its first deep-water port.”

Langdana is also seeing a shift away from just-in-time inventory models, presumably in response to the COVID-related supply chain snarls. He says executive education has had to adjust to these and other shifts, knowing that today’s professionals need to know more about just-in-case inventory management tactics and how to ensure that there’s enough buffer product in the pipeline (but not too much).

Rutgers is also being asked to deliver supply chain strategy courses with all of the fundamentals “baked into” them, versus courses that address topics like artificial intelligence, the tariff wars, big data and machine learning on an on-off basis. “Companies don’t want the education to be siloed,” says Langdana. “They want holistic coursework, so we responded by baking it all into one capstone course.”

Blended learning

Reflecting on how educational delivery methods have changed over the last three years, Langdana says most companies and students were eager to get back to some form of in-person learning after participating in online-only courses during the pandemic. “Our Mini-MBA supply chain certificate participants couldn’t wait to get back to in-person learning experiences,” says Langdana. “They were really gung-ho about getting back and being able to take part in a ‘holistic’ educational experience.”

According to Joe Tillman, manager, I&ES education programs at SMC³, which offers LTL-focused online education, conferences and networking, today’s executives generally want their education served up online and asynchronously. That way, they can consume it at their own pace and take part in any “live” events that may be associated with and/or required for successful completion. To ensure high levels of interactivity, SMC³ introduced its LTL Online Education Hybrid Series, which are webinars that feature industry experts and thought leaders.

“Those experts share their experience and knowledge of working in the LTL space with students and with our SMC³ members, who are also invited to participate in these quarterly webinars,” says Tillman. The company offers 20 such webinars, which help fill the gap by allowing students to pose questions on a wide range of course- and career-related topics.

Plan ahead
Going forward, executive education providers like SMC³ will continue exploring the correlations across people, processes and technology, and will use those insights to create relevant course content that’s applicable in real-world settings. The specific educational delivery methods may be online, offline or some of both, depending on the company’s or executive’s preferences and requirements.

To companies laying out their executive education plans for the remainder of the year and looking ahead to 2023, Brian Thompson, SMC³’s chief commercial officer, recommends assessing current staffing levels, hiring plans and knowledge gaps. And if you’re managing with a leaner team right now, look for the most efficient, fastest ways to get those individuals up to speed on the current supply chain challenges, requirements and opportunities.

“Plan ahead,” Thompson advises. “Factor in your team’s size and skillsets, and then figure out how to make that team as effective and efficient as possible.”
