Talking Supply Chain: State of the SMB supply chain with Alibaba’s Yikun Shao

The current state of the supply chain is causing a degree panic within businesses. Large enterprises may have resources and levers to pull to deal with the uncertainty, but for small and midsized businesses, those same levers may not exist.

On a recent episode of Talking Supply Chain, Brian Straight sat down with Yikun Shao, head of B2B North American supply chain at Alibaba Group, to explore how small and midsize businesses (SMBs) can navigate a changing global trade environment. Shao emphasized that SMBs are increasingly shifting toward supply chain diversification to mitigate risks tied to geopolitical disruptions, single-source dependency, and shifting consumer expectations.

The conversation also touched on recent U.S. tariff changes, including the rollback of the de minimis exemption on low-value imports, and how these policies are adding complexity for SMBs. Shao explained how Alibaba is helping customers respond with tools like duty calculators, expanded supplier networks, and compliance guidance, as well as a new shipping partnership with Maersk that streamlines the booking process for businesses.

Technology plays a major role in Alibaba’s strategy. Shao highlighted several tools built specifically to help SMBs intuitively locate and vet global suppliers—as well as the Alibaba Guarantee program, which offers fixed pricing, transparent shipping, and risk-reducing returns policies.

In closing, Shao offered advice on “future-proofing” operations: regularly evaluate supply chain strategies, maintain strong supplier relationships, leverage digital platforms, and engage in peer networking. These practices, he said, not only help businesses weather disruptions but also position them for growth.
