Listen as Dr.Maria Elena Giner, Commissioner of the US International Boundary and Water Commission, and Rosemary Coates, Executive Director of the Reshoring Institute, discuss the importance of water at the U.S./Mexico border.
In this episode, Commissioner Giner discusses the border treaties and the sharing of water resources between the U.S. and Mexico.
An abundance of water is necessary for sustainable growth in population, industry, and agriculture. The cross-border treaties are helping to improve the environmental conditions of the U.S./Mexico border region to advance the well-being of residents in both nations. But there are also water politics involved regarding the Rio Grande and Colorado Rivers. Further concerns about global warming, droughts, and other weather events must also be considered. Agriculture takes nearly 80% of the water and when there is a shortage of water, cuts are made to agriculture first, becoming an emergency in supplying food to North America.
Dr. Giner’s recommendations for building your career include: Learn to advocate for yourself. If you are not uncomfortable, you will not grow. Take on challenges to build your body of expertise and don’t fear rejection.
