The theme regarding the economy a year ago at this time may very well have been “Happy days are hear again, given solid GDP growth, buoyed by high levels of consumer confidence, manufacturing output, and strong import volumes, among other factors. But move ahead to the present, and the theme could be something along the lines of “Where have all the good times gone?” The shift in economic themes, while jarring, to a degree, has been underway for a little while, going back to late 2018.

August shipments, at 1,084,726, were down 1.4% compared to July’s 1,096,835 and were up 1.4% annually. All months in 2018 have seen growth, with the exception of a 0.2% decline in March, which was the first one going back to a 7.7% annual drop-off in February 2017. On a year-to-date basis through August, shipments are up 5.2% annually at 8,065,607.

China’s Ministry of Commerce has announced that China will fight back against the U.S. by imposing retaliatory tariffs on imports to China such as American soybeans and autos. February shipments, at 949,198, rose 13% annually, marking the fastest rate of growth going back to February 2016, topping January’s 7.7% annual increase, which was the best annual growth rate going back to April 2017 at that point. Through the first two months of 2017, total U.S.-bound waterborne shipments are up 10.3% compared to the same period a year ago at 1,958,188.

Many alarmists are ringing the bell on President Trump’s recent announcement on Trade Wars. Some speculate that it will severely hurt our economy and therefore our supply chain and some think it won’t. It’s time to face the truth – the U.S. economy doesn’t make up such a large percentage globally and in fact, has been on the decline since World War II ended.
