Total 2021 POLA volume—at 10,677,609 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units)—increased 1,464,213 TEU, or 15.89%, annually, topping 2020 by 13%, and setting a new annual record, too, topping the previous high set in 2018. POLB reported that calendar year 2021 volume—at 9,384,368 TEU—was up 15.7% annually, setting a new annual record, topping the previous record of more than 8.11 million TEU set in 2020.

Total December volume—at 1,437,036 units—was off 10.4% annually, steeper than November’s 9.0% annual decline, and for calendar year 2021, total intermodal volume—at 18,435,249—was up 3.6% over 2020.

Myron P. "Mike" Shevell, who rose from driving a pickle truck to leading one of the most profitable family-owned trucking companies during his nearly 75-year career in the industry, died on Jan. 24 in Palm Beach, Fla. The indefatigable Shevell was 87.

The all-time record reading, for the TCI, is May’s. 16.82, which topped March’s 16.17, the previous all-time high.

December’s reading—at 236—was off 3% compared to November, a month which matched October in setting a record for the number of loads moved by motor carriers in a month, according to DAT. And national average truckload spot van and reefer rates saw gains for the seventh consecutive month, with the average van rate hitting the $3 per mile mark for the first time. What’s more, van and refrigerated (reefer) truckload freight rates each set new records, up 21.9% and 29.5%, respectively, on an annual basis.

Total December U.S.-bound containerized freight imports—at 2,666,164 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units)—were off 1.9% compared to November and were down 0.5% annually. Despite these declines, Panjiva observed that total 2021 containerized freight imports set a new annual record, rising 15% over 2020, to 32,970,647 TEU, with Panjiva noting that this tally showed how 2021 imports made up for 2020’s down year, due, in large part, to the Covid-19 pandemic.
