For January, the most recent month for which data is available, the TCI came in at -1.71, a significant improvement over December’s -6.1 and November’s -7.94. That was preceded by October’s -11.25, its lowest level since the April 2020 all-time low, at -28.66. The September TCI reading came in at -2.35.

The long-awaited decision regarding the acquisition of Kansas City Railway Company (KCS) by Canadian Pacific (CP) reached its expected outcome today, with the Surface Transportation Board (STB), an independent adjudicatory and economic-regulatory agency charged by Congress with resolving railroad rate and service disputes and reviewing proposed railroad mergers, saying it has approved the $31 billion deal, which will go into effect on April 14.

February’s van freight TVI—at 207—fell 8%, from January to February, and was down 5% annually. The refrigerated (reefer) TVI—at 162—was down 7.9% compared to January and off 4.7% annually. And the flatbed TVI—at 217—was in line with January’s 218 reading and up 7.9% annually. DAT observed that these lower February TVI readings are not uncommon, due to February having fewer days.

A Reuters report published today indicated that Jim Barber, former chief operating officer for Atlanta-based global freight transportation and logistics services provider UPS, is next in line to become CEO of Minneapolis, Minn.-based global logistics services provider and freight forwarder C.H. Robinson (CHR). Davis would replace former CHR president and CEO Bob Biesterfeld, who was released from his executive roles, as well as his CHR board of directors’ position, after a 3.5-year tenure, effective December 31, 2022. While CHR said at the time that Biesterfeld stepped down, the report said that a regulatory filing issued by the company described his exit as “an involuntary termination by the company.”

For January, the most recent month for which data is available, Port Tracker noted that import volumes, for the ports covered in the report, came in at 1.81 million TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units), for a 4.4% increase compared to December and a 16.5% annual decrease.

While the United States Postal Service (USPS) has seen what could be viewed as mixed fiscal year 2023 earnings results, in that it in February it reported 1.0% operating revenue gain and a $1.0 billion net loss, a trio of parcel experts told LM that the organizations is making inroads. These inroads come on the heels of its "Delivering for America 10-Year Strategic Plan” that was rolled out in March 2021 and focused on achieving financial sustainability and service excellence, in order to meet customer and business needs. The plan takes an ambitious approach focused on helping the USPS get on solid financial footing, as the organization has been in the red over the last 15-plus years.

For the month of February, Descartes observed that U.S. container volumes—at 1,734,272 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units)—were off 16.2% compared to January, while falling 25.0% annually, and down 0.3% compared to February 2019 prior to the pandemic.

RK Logistics Group, a Silicon Valley provider of warehousing, e-commerce fulfillment and supply chain management services, recently announced it has opened up a new Hayward, Calif.-based commercial logistics facility to support the local manufacturing of electric vehicles. The company said that this is its 12th Bay Area warehousing facility, covering a cumulative 1.3 million square-feet.

The Services PMI—at 55.1 (a reading of 50 or higher signals growth)—was essentially even with January’s reading with a 0.1% decline, growing, at a slower rate, for the second consecutive month. January was 6.0% above December’s 49.2, which was down 6.9% compared to November’s 55.5. ISM added that the overall economy also grew, at a slower rate, in February, for the second consecutive month.

Rail carloads—at 905,744—were down 1.6%, or 15,101 units—compared to February 2021. Intermodal containers and trailers—at 943,979—were off 8.4%, or 86,351 units, annually.

Fort Smith, Arkansas-based ArcBest, a full-service supply chain and logistics services provider, said this week it has rolled out a new hardware and software platform, which is focused on modernizing and transforming how freight is loaded, unloaded, and transferred. Entitled Vaux, ArcBest said that through this platform, a trailer’s entire contents can be unloaded in less than five minutes while also provide what it described as complete visibility into freight movement within warehouse facilities, on the dock or over the road.

Following its recent announcement signaling a major executive leadership change, in which effective July 1, 2023, Kevin M. (“Marty") Freeman will succeed Greg C. Gantt as ODFL President and Chief Executive Officer, as per its Board of Directors, Thomasville, N.C.-based national less-than-truckload carrier Old Dominion Freight Line (ODFL) announced additional executive leadership changes this week.
