India's Supply Chain Council

November 7, 2007

Recently, I discovered the Web site for India’s Supply Chain Council, which you can find here. Not like I didn’t know India had a supply chain council, nor was I shocked to find such an extensive and informative site, but the occasional article like this one here is an interesting perspective. The site doesn’t thumb its nose at the international corporate community, but it doesn’t promote its homeland the way you’d expect your local chamber of commerce to, either. Its writers are not afraid to express the daring opinion that (gasp!) China and India are not the blooming industrial powerhouses the world thinks they are.

While the trend has swayed so far in favor of outsourcing to these countries that the movement at times takes on the appearance of a stampeding herd of animals, the isolated contrarian views found on the site are a good read for those fearing that outsourcing to either country is a little too good to be true. That’s not to say it isn’t worth it to go there, but the pieces I read are a good antidote to the pie-in-the-sky promise that the mainstream business press would have you believe exists in China and India.

The Council provides very good value for money professional events with interesting topics and solid networking. It's a very efficient and well run organization unlike many bureaucratic associations in India eg. CII Institute of Logistics

Yes, I agree with N. Kumar. I have known the Council for 2 years and its team is doing a great job. They had a bit of trouble last year when its Delhi-based director Abhijit Shivekar left (and that may explain the problem with the survey) but they are now back in business with a new team in Mumbai. They are actually preparing a very interesting event on Private Equity & Logistics in Mumbai on May 28 which I am planning to attend.

Just want to correct a few things here. The India Supply Chain Council is alive and running. It recently completed an interesting conference on Cost Optimization in Mumbai that was well organized and attended. If you check their website www.supplychains.com, you will see that it's planning some new events in India. So guys, before you make this commments, I suggest you check thier site one more time.

As Piyush says it is just a website and nothing more - it is not clear who's behind it. ISCC promised to conduct survey on our behalf. We deligently transferred the money for the service, and more than 2 years on - no survey and no money. We can't trace the company - their office vanished from India, and its founder not replying to any emails ...

Well, you are correct to say that India has a 'Supply Chain Council', but it is nothing more than a website and an occasional event. There is nothing much India specific on the site. I think that a few articles saying that India and China are not big - agrees with your own view and that is why you like this site. Nothing more than that. Regards Piyush Shah piyushashah@yahoo.com
