No More Plastic Bags in China?

January 10, 2008

According to this article in today’s Shanghai Daily, the "Paper or plastic?" argument will be over pretty soon in the low-cost country sourcer’s paradise. The government is planning to ban plastic bags, in an effort to conserve oil and reduce waste. Makes you wonder whether or not these regulations will be extended to force foreign companies to "go green" when outsourcing to China.

At any rate, the regulations are bound to have some kind of impact on waste and resource consumption. According to the article, people in China use "up to 3 billion plastic bags a day." That’s enough to hand out two to every man, woman and child in the country and still have nearly half a million left over.
