China is Getting Even Greener
January 11, 2008

Recently, I posted about how China is trying to help the environment by banning plastic grocery bags. According to this article from Chinadaily.com, it seems the government is not stopping there, modifying its tax structure to encourage companies to go green.

From the article: "The goal is to end a situation where resources are lightly taxed to support economic development, which has in turn led to waste and pollution."

I've heard China's current financial state likened to that of the United States at the turn of the 20th century, a nation on the brink of becoming a greater world power, and leading industrialized nation. If that's true, it seems the government wants to get environmentalism in on the ground floor, something the U.S. didn't worry about 100 years ago.

Of course, as the quote above illustrates, the current system encourages financial growth, so it will be interesting to see how the Chinese government balances the demands of a growing economy with the needs of Mother Earth.
