U.S. and U.K. top countries for RFID implementation

Robert Spiegel -- Supply Chain Management Review, 11/29/2006

The United States continues to the largest adopter of RFID technology by a wide margin. A report from IDTechEx has identified more than 800 instances of U.S. companies implementing RFID, while the second-place U.K. has less than 300 implementations. Most other countries have less than 100 instances of RFID projects.

Over the past year there has been some shifting among the top 10 countries implementing RFID. China and Korea have both moved up, while Australia has dropped from the seventh to the tenth spot. New Australian projects cover a broad range of applications, from books in libraries to tagging patients in hospitals. The country now has a legal requirement to tag cattle and racehorses.

The number of projects, however, does not necessarily correlate with the amount of money spent on RFID. While the U.K. is second in the number of implementations, China, Korea, and Japan are all spending more on RFID projects.
