RFID middleware market heats up

By Robert Spiegel -- Supply Chain Management Review, 10/25/2006

According to Venture Development Corp.’s (VDC) annual RFID Business Planning Service Report, the global market for RFID middleware exceeded $24 million in 2005. VDC expects the market to grow at a 50-percent compound annual growth rate through 2010, reaching $190 million within five years.

The report also notes that the competitive landscape of RFID middleware is changing as mergers and acquisitions continue and new competition emerges—a condition the report says will continue in the field over the next three to five years. Recent deals in the market include NCR’s purchase of IC Velocity and BEA Systems’ acquisition of Connecterra. The report forecasts that future buyers will include IBM and webMethods, which will try to push their technology to the edge through acquisitions.
