Many people assume that there are no regulations left governing transportation. That’s not only an incorrect assumption, says veteran transportation attorney John M. Cutler Jr., it’s one that can get your company in a lot of financial and legal trouble.

Cutler’s concise (52-page) book highlights the rules and regulations governing the movement of goods both domestically and internationally. It begins with a quick overview of the early transportation laws passed in the United States and then moves into a discussion of the landmark regulatory reform laws of the late-1970s and early 1980s that affected the air, rail, and motor carrier industries in the United States.

For each of the major modes the booklet explains where things stand today in terms of regulations and what particular provisions shippers need to be familiar with. The author includes an update on the regulations governing international transportation, paying particular attention to the security-related measures such as C-TPAT (Customs-Trade Partnership against Terrorism) implemented to protect U.S. shipping community and the American pubic in general.

Rules of the Game should be required reading for any newcomer to the transportation/ logistics field. It’s also well suited for veteran managers seeking a refresher on the regulatory front. The book provides a good summary of where we are today from a regulatory standpoint, how we got here, and what we need to be concerned about going forward.
